Real Hungarian Conversations: Weekend & Summer Plans | Street Interviews
Want to hear what Hungarian actually sounds like in spontaneous conversation?
In this episode of the Plain Hungarian Street Interviews series, I asked people about their weekend routines and summer plans.
The questions are simple. The conversations go much further.
We talk about football, dogs, working from home, family, Lake Balaton, Hungarian festivals, holidays, food and even the typical Sunday lunch. That is one of my favourite things about real conversations: one small question can lead almost anywhere.
Why street interviews are so useful for learning Hungarian
When you listen to spontaneous Hungarian, you hear much more than vocabulary and grammar.
You hear people hesitate, change direction, correct themselves, add information they have just remembered, react to the other person and use small expressions that keep the conversation moving.
In this episode, for example, you can hear expressions such as:
most már = now / by now / anymore
belefér = there is enough time, money or space for it
így adódott = it just happened that way
úgy volt, hogy... = the plan was that...
ha már így alakult = since things turned out this way
mikor hogy = it depends
amúgy = otherwise / by the way
nagyjából ennyi = that’s about it
úgy jött ki a lépés, hogy... = things worked out so that...
elég sűrűn = pretty often
These little words and expressions are often exactly what makes real Hungarian difficult to follow. You may not have seen them in your textbook, so when you hear one, your attention gets stuck on it. You notice that you don't know it, try to work out what it means, and by the time you do, the speaker is already at the end of the sentence and you've missed everything that came after it.
Spoken Hungarian is full of expressions like these, so the sooner you become familiar with them, the easier it becomes to keep up with real conversations. That's why I've highlighted some of the most useful ones in the transcript.
